Phuket offers many different backgrounds for photography: tropical beaches, colourful historic streets, panoramic viewpoints, luxury resorts and private villas.
This guide covers some of the best photoshoot locations in Phuket and explains which places work well for couples, families, individual portraits and commercial projects.

The most famous place is not always the best choice. Phuket photoshoot locations should be selected according to your preferred style, accommodation, session time, number of participants and the type of photographs you want to create.
As a local photographer working in Phuket since 2015, I choose locations according to the light, season, weather, accessibility and atmosphere of each session.

How to Choose a Location
When deciding where to take photos in Phuket, consider the final atmosphere you want to create.

A beach is usually suitable for natural family and couple photographs. Phuket Old Town offers a colourful urban setting, while a private villa can provide greater comfort and privacy. Viewpoints work well for dramatic scenery but may have limited space and stronger wind.
Travel time is also important. For a shorter session, one carefully selected location normally produces better results than rushing between several distant places.
Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao is one of the most versatile photography locations on the west coast of Phuket. Its long shoreline provides open space, while the surrounding area includes resorts, villas, beach clubs and quieter sections of beach.

It works particularly well for:
- family photography;
- couple photoshoots;
- pregnancy portraits;
- individual travel photography;
- sunset sessions.
Bang Tao is especially convenient for people staying near Laguna Phuket, Cherngtalay, Surin or Kamala. The location can feel natural, relaxed or luxurious depending on the section of beach and the selected styling.
You can find more information in my detailed Bang Tao photoshoot guide.
Nai Harn Beach
Nai Harn combines an open beach with tropical greenery and hills. It is a strong choice for people staying in Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata or other parts of southern Phuket.

The location is suitable for couples, families, individual portraits and wellness photography.
Morning sessions normally offer fewer people and more comfortable temperatures. Sunset provides warmer colours but may also bring more visitors.
Beach conditions change throughout the year, so the exact section and shooting time should be selected according to the season, tide and weather.
At selected beaches, it may also be possible to include a horse in the session. Learn more about arranging a beach horse photoshoot in Phuket.
Ya Nui Beach
Ya Nui is a smaller tropical bay with rocks, greenery and turquoise water. It provides several backgrounds within a relatively compact area.

It is best suited to:
- family;
- honeymoon photography;
- individual portraits;
- short lifestyle sessions.
Because the beach is small, it can feel crowded during popular hours. The amount of available space also depends on the tide.
Ya Nui is better for small sessions than large families or commercial productions involving extensive equipment.

Mai Khao and Nai Yang
Mai Khao and Nai Yang are useful options for people staying in northern Phuket.

Mai Khao has a long, open shoreline and a quieter, more minimal atmosphere. It works well for couples, editorial portraits and cinematic lifestyle photography.
Nai Yang combines beach, trees and shaded areas. This makes it suitable for families, relaxed couples and personal branding sessions.
The northern beaches may not be practical for people staying in Rawai, Nai Harn or Kata because travelling across Phuket can take a considerable amount of time.
Mai Khao is also known for aircraft views near Phuket International Airport. However, aircraft direction and frequency depend on weather and airport operations and cannot be guaranteed.
Phuket Old Town
Phuket Old Town is one of the best places for a photoshoot in Phuket when you want something different from a tropical beach.

Its colourful Sino-European buildings, historic streets, cafés, shutters and narrow lanes work well for:
- individual portraits;
- fashion photography;
- couple sessions;
- travel photography;
- personal branding;
- street-style content.
Popular areas include Thalang Road, Soi Romanee, Dibuk Road and Phang Nga Road.
Early morning is usually the best time for softer light and cleaner backgrounds. Later in the day, the streets become busier but can provide a livelier travel or documentary atmosphere.
On Sunday afternoon and evening, Thalang Road becomes a walking street market. This is interesting for colourful lifestyle photographs but less suitable for clean, uninterrupted portraits.

Cafés and Restaurants
Phuket’s cafés and restaurants can provide stylish settings for lifestyle portraits, couple photography, personal branding and commercial content. Depending on the venue, the atmosphere may feel tropical, modern, elegant or more casual.

Indoor locations can also be useful during hot weather or short periods of rain. However, professional photography should always be agreed with the management in advance. Some venues may require a minimum order, location fee or booking outside their busiest hours.
The location should be selected according to its natural light, interior design, available space and the number of people involved in the photoshoot.

Promthep Cape and Windmill Viewpoint
Promthep Cape is one of Phuket’s most recognisable sunset locations. It offers an open horizon, cliffs and dramatic coastal scenery.

It works well for couple portraits, travel photography, silhouettes and flowing dresses. The main disadvantage is that it can become crowded before sunset.
Windmill Viewpoint provides similar coastal scenery in a smaller area. It is suitable for couples, individual portraits, fashion and wellness photography.
Both viewpoints can be windy and have limited protection from strong sun or rain. They work best for small, mobile sessions rather than large families or complex productions.
Private Villas and Resorts
A private villa or resort may be the best option when privacy, comfort and a premium atmosphere are priorities. A suitable hotel or villa can be selected for almost any type of photography.

Depending on the property, one location can provide:
- tropical gardens;
- modern interiors;
- infinity pools;
- terraces;
- sea views;
- space for changing outfits.
Villas and resorts are particularly convenient for families, pregnancy photography, couples, fashion projects and commercial content.
A Phuket villa photoshoot also reduces travelling time and provides covered areas if the weather changes.
Professional photography should be confirmed with the property in advance. Some hotels and villas require permission or charge an additional location fee.

Tennis Courts, Golf Courses and Gyms
Tennis courts, golf courses and gyms provide interesting settings for sports, fashion, fitness and personal branding photography. They are particularly suitable for athletes, coaches, activewear brands, hotels and people who want a more dynamic alternative to a traditional beach photoshoot.

In Phuket, some gyms offer open spaces or panoramic sea views, while outdoor training areas may be surrounded by tropical greenery. These locations make it possible to combine athletic movement with scenery that feels specific to the island.
The best shooting time depends on the direction of the light, the activity being photographed and the operating schedule of the venue. Early morning and late afternoon usually provide more comfortable temperatures and softer light.
Most courts, golf clubs, gyms and sports facilities are private. Photography must be arranged with the venue in advance and may require a booking, location fee or permission for additional equipment and team members.

You can find more information about sports content creation in Phuket, including photography and video for athletes, coaches, fitness professionals and sports brands.
Car Photoshoot in Phuket
A convertible can become both part of the photoshoot and a practical way to include several different locations in one visual story.

Depending on the selected route and the duration of the session, we can combine tropical landscapes, coastal roads, viewpoints and more stylish urban surroundings. This creates a varied gallery with relaxed summer photographs, movement and a cinematic travel atmosphere.
A car photoshoot is not only about posing beside the vehicle. We can photograph the journey, spontaneous moments, open roads and the experience of exploring Phuket.
The route must be planned according to traffic, parking, available light and safe places to stop. Travel between locations should also be calculated separately from the photography time.

Marinas and Yachts
Marinas and yachts create a modern and luxurious atmosphere. They are suitable for couples, fashion photography, personal branding and commercial projects.

A yacht session may include harbour backgrounds, open-water scenery, sunset light and photographs on deck.
Photography at a marina may be restricted if you are not staying at the associated property or using its services. In some cases, the session can be arranged in advance for an additional fee with the marina or pier administration.
A yacht photoshoot in Phuket requires additional planning because the schedule depends on weather, sea conditions, marina regulations and the movement of the boat.
Waterfalls: Beautiful but Not Always Practical
A professional waterfall photoshoot in Phuket comes with several practical challenges.

The appearance of the waterfalls depends heavily on recent rainfall and the season. Access is not always easy, and reaching the location may involve uneven paths, mud or a longer walk through the forest.
It is also important to consider Phuket’s heat, high humidity and mosquitoes. Popular waterfalls may have other visitors nearby. People can sometimes be removed from individual photographs during editing, but the more important question is whether you will still feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera after the journey and all these practical difficulties.
In most cases, a waterfall is better suited to a casual walk with friends and a few photographs taken on an iPhone than to a carefully planned professional portrait session.

Beach or Phuket Old Town?
Choose a beach if you want:
- a tropical atmosphere;
- natural movement;
- open scenery;
- sunset colours.

Choose Phuket Old Town if you want:
- colourful architecture;
- an urban atmosphere;
- fashion or street-style portraits;
- cafés and historic details;
- more flexibility with clothing.

It is possible to combine two locations, but they should be close enough to avoid spending a large part of the session travelling.
For shorter photoshoots, one carefully selected location normally produces better results than rushing between several places.
Morning or Sunset?
Morning sessions generally provide:
- fewer people;
- lower temperatures;
- cleaner backgrounds;
- calmer conditions;
- a comfortable experience for families.

Sunset sessions may provide:
- warmer colours;
- softer directional light;
- silhouettes;
- dramatic skies;
- a romantic atmosphere.
The session should begin before sunset rather than when the sun reaches the horizon. This provides enough time to photograph in soft daylight and protects the session from small delays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best beaches for a photoshoot in Phuket?
There is no single best beach for every person. Bang Tao provides space and convenient access, Nai Harn combines beach and tropical greenery, Ya Nui has rocks and a compact bay, while Mai Khao offers a quieter and more minimal setting.
The right choice depends on your hotel, preferred style, season, number of participants and required level of privacy.
Can we take photographs at our hotel?
Usually, but professional photography should be confirmed with the hotel in advance. Some properties restrict access to certain areas or require an additional fee.
Can we use two locations?
Yes, if the locations are close and the session includes enough time. Travel time should be calculated separately.
What happens if it rains?
We can wait for the rain to pass, reschedule or cancel the photoshoot. We will make the decision at the time based on the intensity of the rain, the scheduled session time and our availability.

Plan Your Phuket Photoshoot
The right location should complement you rather than distract from you. Light, comfort, privacy and timing are often more important than choosing the most famous place on the island.
